Welcome to INDEX Podcast, where we uncover exciting interior design stories from renowned figures of our industry.
I'm your host, Shuchita Gupta, Senior Conference Manager for INDEX, the show that transforms spaces with design, product and technology, coming to you this May.
I'd love to welcome Harry Moore, the Interior Design Director at Bishop Design, for today's podcast talking about leadership in the industry.
Welcome, Harry, how are you doing?
Thank you, good, thank you, how are you?
Very well, how has your day been so far?
First of all, welcome to Dubai, if I may add that as well.
It's been good, thank you, busy.
Busy, all right.
Straight up, because we of course are talking about leadership and leadership is quite a term that is used in this industry.
We have it across actually every industry.
So what does leadership in specific mean to you?
To me, leadership means a variety of different elements.
Most important to me is good communication, especially with the team.
Exactly.
Having good communication with the team, but also with the clients is beneficial for everybody.
As soon as you get that communication through, it's kind of smooth sailing.
And it's about building the trust and relationships with them to produce the best quality of work.
So, communication, trust, transparency, everything that leads to great leadership indeed.
I like how every industry actually works on the same principles of leadership, you know, it's not different for anything else.
And with your new look, I'm so sorry, with your new position as the interior design director at Bishop Design, which is something quite new indeed, what's your plan?
Spill all the beans.
Oh, well, to be honest, it's been super busy recently.
I've literally been thrown in a deep end.
We currently have some really exciting projects.
Like always.
Always.
Huge projects, but also the smaller projects.
It's just been go straight away, basically.
I started four months ago and getting used to a new team, understanding them, also them understanding me is also, it's a constant, it's a constant change.
It's a learning for everybody, basically.
Obviously, Paul is in and out of the office all the time, travelling and yeah, it's kind of, it's figuring out where we're going in terms of the team, what's happening, projects.
Yeah, like I said, literally thrown in at the deep end straight away.
So what's the synergy like with the team?
You know, as you mentioned, Paul is in and out and I think now he's based in Miami, if I'm not wrong.
So what is your synergy and relationship like in the last four months?
Well for me it's keeping the team, it's keeping that buzz within the team and still it's producing amazing work.
Paul is like I mentioned Paul's in and out of the office he's traveling to meet clients everywhere and it is it's just it's just keeping that that team bonding going and keeping their quality of work coming out basically.
They all have their own qualities the whole team is like each one of them has has their quality on projects they have their input and it's about letting their creative, their creative kind of like, I hate the word juices going.
It's kind of like letting them lead it with me overseeing everything.
Obviously, I'm in contact with Paul constantly.
He's always on the phone, always on the phone.
But again, it's whenever he's in the office, we're constantly having meetings about projects.
We're talking on the phone constantly.
And I think it is.
I think also it's not just with the team.
It's also with Paul as well.
Obviously, I'm new to the company.
So it's making sure that the direction of work is always, it always has the same quality in the detail.
I'm starting a Bishop, I'm shocked at the detail that goes into the work and also the love from the team.
I mean, the love that goes into these projects is just up there.
It's amazing.
Everyone's very passionate about what they do.
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
And it's the time spent, it's the time spent.
But also it's seeing, for me, It's seeing the places that we design, it's seeing people use it, it's that user experience, it's seeing the team go to see the final product.
And I think that's the beauty of design, is that for the team, they've been working on it back and forth, back and forth, there's changes, it's client expectations.
But also, it's that end product, when you go in there and the team smile at it and they're like, I actually produced this.
I think that's the beauty of it.
and the team at Bishop are epic, they're epic.
So you spoke about the team is buzzing and how do you really, I mean, what have you implemented you believe that has really helped the team keep buzzing?
What keeps them energized?
What is it that you have brought in, you know, with you?
I talk a lot, so I talk a lot.
And to be honest, I'm in the middle of everybody.
So there's all of the design team, I'm in the middle of it.
So I know exactly what's going on all the time.
And I like that, I like having the, I'm not in my own office, I like being in the middle of it.
So it's finally what they've been up to every weekend, it's stuff like that.
But also, to be honest, when I arrive, there's a lot of protocols that have already been implemented.
So, you know, there's team meetings, going through workflow, going through projects, they've already been implemented.
For me, there's music blazing in the studio, so it has a real kind of vibe going on.
But for me, it's little things, it's like getting to know each of them, going to know their backgrounds, where everybody's from.
But also, it's rearranging the office slightly for me.
It's making sure that people are learning all the time.
So there's a junior next to a mid, next to a senior, making sure that everybody's learning, everyone's creatively, there's a buzz within the office.
And I think that's really important.
When I was kind of growing up as a designer, it was something that I always had someone to learn from, and it's something that I want to implement there.
so everyone's learning from each other, even I'm still learning.
It's the one thing.
It's a continuous process.
Yeah, exactly.
And you never really stop learning no matter where you are.
Talking to Paul, yeah, talking to Paul, every day I'm learning constantly about different things and I think that's the thing, you never stop learning.
Yeah, and funny thing you mentioned that you never stop learning because I'm sure from your past experiences you have gained a lot and you have learned a lot as well.
Yeah, yeah.
So how exactly are you gonna implement that with your current role at Bishop?
Like what is it that you think that you're gonna really bring in terms of all these learnings and experience that you've had with the past agencies?
Yeah, well, I actually freelanced in London, so I used to move around a lot from different agencies and I learned the good stuff and I learned the bad stuff and I've taken on the good stuff.
So for me, it's about team morale.
It's about if someone's, say if there's a project not going quite right, it's making sure it goes on the right route and it's picking up that soon.
So it's picking up at the earliest stage, so it doesn't go off on a tangent.
And for me, that's critical.
It's the one thing that I've learned is good management, is making sure that the team's happy, quality of work is still there, and producing the best jobs that the team can produce.
Harry, talking more about yourself now, I'm not sure if there's something you'll be able to name drop to us, but is there a project that you're in particularly really proud of being a part of with Bishop ideally, but I know it's just been four months, so no pressure, no pressure.
But even including any of your work you've done in UK or anything that you would like to just talk to us about.
Well, funny enough, there's a project we're working on at the moment.
We can't say what project it is, secret.
Feel the beats.
No, we can't.
It's a secret project, but once that is finished, it's gonna be amazing, it's gonna be amazing.
It's an amazing project.
It's a long-term project.
We have most of the team working on it at the moment.
There's quite a lot of team working on it.
And again, it's a mixture of trying to keep this project going along with keeping the other projects going, but it's a secret.
I cannot.
I can see that excitement on your face right now.
Yeah, even I'm smiling.
I'm smiling because- You're literally so excited about it as you're trying to speak.
But again, as I mentioned, it's a long-term project.
It's a really long-term project.
But I've got to say, when I was in the UK, I did a really small little boutique retail.
Okay.
And it was amazing.
The client was amazing.
They, we kind of developed the store together and it was just a beautiful store.
It was a jewelry store and the client was amazing.
And I think that's the thing is that development with client, which I love.
Relationships.
Yeah, yeah.
It's, and it is, as I mentioned, it's that end product.
It's seeing the final, seeing all the work that's gone through.
So it's from the first concept, the drawing package, the visuals, it's seeing that actually come to life.
I just see that excitement and passion in you while you speak about, you know, and I can just imagine what it must be to get a, you know, empty area and just be like, okay, make your, like, you know, make something.
And as and when it progresses and when you get the final product, that feeling of achievement must be absolutely thrilling.
I think that's the thing is that it's seeing it's seeing user experience it's seeing a guest user it's seeing it whether it's a hotel seeing guest use pool using the bars and enjoying it and enjoying it that's the thing and seeing people's people actually use the space and smile seeing clients say to you wow you did an amazing job sort of thing it's exactly what we expected but even better and I think that is the thing it's it's it's that end product and it's I don't usually go back to designs that I've done.
So I see it open and that's it.
I never usually go back to see them.
And is there any reason why?
Because that is kind of unique actually.
I don't know.
For me, there's a thing where they, it changes a lot.
So spaces change and things.
And for me, I'm kind of like once it's done, it's...
It's completed.
Yeah, it's completed.
It's like tick off the list and then it's move on to the next one.
So we all know where we need to hang out with Harry, take him back to all his old places.
Take him back to all his old places.
Exactly.
Just so that he cannot run away.
But Harry, there are a lot of young leaders that's coming up, you know, and you're a great example and a great addition to the Bishop family.
What is it that you think is very important as a young leader joining a dynamic team?
And like, you know, sort of a message you wanna give out to everyone who's just joined a great team, who's pretty young and across industries, but what will make you a successful leader?
I think it's one of those things where you have to admit if you've done wrong sometimes.
And I think it's learning from stuff.
It's constantly learning from stuff.
I always, when I first started in the industry, I had an amazing team leader.
He was, I took so much inspiration from him.
And again, as I mentioned, I freelanced a lot.
I've worked at different companies and it's taking that note from people, looking at people and actually learning from them in terms of the way you articulate yourself, the way you work, the way you produce presentations for clients, the way you talk to clients.
And it's all those little things that I've taken on and I think that's the thing, as I mentioned, everybody's learning.
Everybody's learning every day.
So the key to be a good leader is to learn everything.
Yeah, yeah.
Not just from each other, but from your surroundings.
from your climbs, from your competition.
Yeah, yeah, it's observing everything.
And it's actually going out there and doing stuff.
Like I would say with the team, there's a thing about being stuck in the office sometimes and it's about getting out there and having inspiration, seeing restaurants, going to the beach, watching the sunset, it's all going on in your brain and it's those little moments that may spark an idea.
And I think that's the nice thing is it's seeing what's out there.
I mean, Dubai is an amazing place for it.
It is.
There's so much going on and there's so many new restaurants opening up, new retail, new everything, new malls, hotels.
And it is, everything's going on here.
As a city, I don't think there's ever a dull moment or like you can be like, oh, I've done everything because you can never do everything.
You can never be bored here, that's the thing.
There's always something new popping up somewhere, whether it's in form of retail, F&B or hotel, or just an activity or an entertainment center, but it's always so buzzing.
There's always something going on.
That's the thing, at the weekends, you're never bored for a cafe.
There's always a new cafe popping up, a pop-up.
There's always something to do, and I think that's the beauty of it, and you do get inspiration from different places.
Harry, are you excited for your future with Bishop in Dubai?
Yeah, yeah, I'm excited to see where the studio goes.
I'm excited to see what new projects we get from clients, from existing clients, new clients and really kind of like creating, it sounds weird creating a buzz in the studio.
There already is, but it's taking it to that next level.
And I know when Paul's in the studio, everyone's super excited.
There's a real, he's a, I can't quite think of the word.
Tell me about it.
Every time I see Paul, there's a weird excitement and energy that comes to me.
I was really scared, you know, in 22, he was a speaker and I had not met him till then.

That definitely is going to ignite the whole family together, make it even more buzzing.
And that's what I think the beauty of young leaders are.
That there is something that you bring with you extra that can really help move it.
Yeah.
Great.
So exciting times ahead for you, Harry.
Exciting times ahead for Bishop Design and for the industry as well.
And before I say my thank yous to you, I would love for you to leave a thoughtful statement for all the listeners.
Oh, I think I'd say, this is a hard question.
I think I'd probably be, you've kind of, I can't think of one.
I think I'd say learn every day.
Take every day and learn from it.
Everything you do, just learn from it because it's gonna take you to the next level.
Fantastic.
Thank you.
I'm not gonna ask you anything more than this.
Good.
Thank you so much for joining us, Harry, and all the very best.
We're all very excited to see what amazing stuff you guys do together.
Perfect.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
